Bioremediation of PAH and TPH Impacted Soils for OneSteel in Whyalla, SA

February 5, 2024

OneSteel faced significant environmental challenges at their Whyalla site, which included a large volume (30,000m³) of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil, with high concentrations of PAHs and TPHs. The site's soil/fill required extensive remediation to meet SA EPA standards and transform the contaminated area into usable land.

The Solution

EESI Group was engaged to design, install, and operate a bioremediation pad on-site. The process involved using waste materials like ammonium sulfate, wooden chips, and shelly sand, along with proprietary ameliorants and accelerants. The remediation involved initial intensive treatment, followed by planting vegetation on the pad. This approach not only treated the contaminated soil but also transformed it into topsoil suitable for landscaping.

Client Benefits

The project was a success, with 8,000m³ of severely contaminated soil being converted into valuable topsoil, used for covering slag heaps and site landscaping. This process significantly reduced dust pollution in the surrounding area. Overall, about 30,000m³ of contaminated material was remediated, demonstrating the effectiveness of EESI's approach in meeting environmental compliance and contributing to sustainable site development.
